Sam Crawford Baseball Field stands as a tribute to “Wahoo Sam” Crawford, the National Baseball Hall of Famer who was born and raised in the small, East Central Nebraska community of Wahoo. Sam Crawford played Major League Baseball, first for the Cincinnati Reds and later for the Detroit Tigers, where he was a teammate of Ty Cobb. Crawford was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1957 and holds the MLB record for most career triples.

Wahoo’s baseball icon is featured prominently at the ballpark that bears his name. Several painted murals on the grandstand walls pay tribute to Crawford. One of which is a large “309” with white numbers on blue background, a reference to Crawford’s MLB career triples record. A painted replica of Crawford’s Hall of Fame plaque adorns the wall as well, right next to a black and white mural of the man himself.

The ballfield itself is a Hall of Fame worthy playing surface. It features a smooth, grass infield and in-ground dugouts. The outfield is spacious and symmetrical, and in perhaps another nod to Crawford, 309 feet of homerun power is required to clear the left field fence. There are bullpens down the left and right field lines. A batting cage sits just outside the perimeter fence, adjacent to the right field bullpen.

Another unique feature of the ballpark is the grandstand seating, which consists of concrete bleachers and red stadium seats salvaged from Rosenblatt Stadium, the former home of the College Baseball World Series in Omaha, Nebraska.

The yard is home to the Wahoo American Legion Post #82 Junior and Senior baseball teams. The Wahoo Juniors won Nebraska State Championships in 2000 and 2023. The Wahoo Wombats, a local town team and member of the Dodge County Baseball League, also play their home games at Sam Crawford Baseball Field.

Located within the confines of Arbor State Park in Wymore, Nebraska, is Wymore Arbor State Park Baseball Field.

A wooden, covered grandstand is this ballpark’s most idyllic and notable feature. The grandstand bleachers provide a behind the plate view and curve slightly around the first and third base lines. There are in-ground, concrete dugouts, with roofs for cover, for both the home and visiting ball clubs. A natural grass infield with dirt basepaths provide the look and charm missing from many modern amateur baseball fields. The outfield dimensions are mostly symmetrical. It is 315 feet from home plate to the fence down the left and right field lines and 340 feet to center field. Additional ballpark features include bullpens for both teams and a batting cage behind the grandstand. For ballpark patrons, a concession stand sits on the first base side and an announcer’s booth on the third base side.

Arbor State Park Baseball Field is home to the Wymore Junior and Senior American Legion baseball teams, who were Class C Nebraska Junior State Champions in 1975 and Class C Senior State Runners-up in 1988. Jake Diekman, a pitcher and 13-year veteran of Major League Baseball is a native of Wymore, Nebraska and spent summer evenings toeing the rubber at Arbor State Park for the local American Legion baseball team.

The park has been the host site for multiple American Legion Nebraska State Championship Tournaments. The 1989 Class C Senior State Tournament at Wymore Arbor State Park Baseball Field featured a championship game between Wakefield and Creighton. Creighton prevailed, earning its first American Legion Nebraska State Championship. The 1996 Class C Senior State Tournament and 2001 Class C Junior State Tournament were also hosted in Wymore.

Adding to its historical significance, the park hosted barnstormers from the Negro leagues in the 1940s and 1950s for regular season and exhibition games. Satchel Paige, Ernie Banks, and “Cool Papa” Bell are a few of the legends of the game who have roamed the Wymore ballyard.

Weston Ball Field, located in Weston, NE, is perhaps best known for the monument behind the home plate bleachers honoring local baseball legend Bob Cerv, who was born and raised in the Weston area. Cerv (1925-2017), a one-time Major League Baseball All-Star (1958) and World Series Champion (1956), also attended and played baseball at the nearby University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

The well-maintained Weston Ball Field features a grass infield, above-ground dugouts, a batting cage near the left field foul pole, and modern restrooms. Large, Stars and Stripes painted wooden "Ws" hang from the backs of each dugout and atop each side of the home plate backstop.

Weston Ball Field is home to generations of youth and amateur baseball and softball players. A sign and bulletin board sitting on the corner of Plum Street and Vine Street, honoring its local heroes, proudly announces that "State Champions Play Here."
